The
second collage portrays descendants of the original First
Nations inhabitants and European newcomers to the Prince
Albert Model Forest area.
It
is believed First Nations people have been in the model
forest area for 9,500 – 10,500 years. The Cree people
were the first to live permanently in the Prince Albert
Model Forest region. They lived in harmony with one-another
and with nature – it was truly a time of “Forests
For People”, as the area was blessed with an abundant
forest. The well-being and survival of these societies
depended on their ability to transform flora and fauna
into life-sustaining food, clothing, shelter, medicine
and tools.
During
the mid 1700s, European traders began to arrive in the
Prince Albert Model Forest area. In the mid 1860s, European
settlers arrived and began to harvest forests. This was
the birth of the forest industry in Prince Albert and surrounding
area.
